What we put on our skin matters—but what we eat matters just as much. Our skin is a living, dynamic organ that depends on proper nutrition to stay strong, balanced, and radiant. Both macronutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) play critical roles in maintaining the skin’s barrier and protecting it from inflammation, oxidative stress, and premature aging.

When these nutrients are available in abundance, the skin becomes more resilient—better able to withstand sun exposure, environmental toxins, and the natural aging process. But in cases of deficiency, the skin is more vulnerable to breakouts, dullness, dryness, and early signs of aging.

At my NE Portland aesthetic practice, we often combine internal support with external treatments like Botox, Sculptra, vitamin B12 injections, and IV therapy to help clients achieve lasting results from the inside out.

Here are a few of the foundational nutrients I recommend for glowing, healthy skin:

Vitamin C: Collagen’s Best Friend

Vitamin C is highly concentrated in the skin and is essential for collagen production. Over time—and with sun exposure or environmental stress—our natural levels decline, which can lead to fine lines, sagging, and dullness.

Vitamin C travels to the skin through the bloodstream, so it’s important to include it in your diet. Citrus fruits, bell peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, brussels sprouts, turnips, and leafy greens are all excellent sources. I also use Pure Encapsulation’s Ascorbic Acid Powder as a reliable supplement when needed.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs): Skin Barrier Support

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids help preserve the skin’s barrier, keeping it hydrated and protected. They also help regulate inflammation, which is especially important for anyone with reactive or sensitive skin.

While most of us get enough omega-6 through common foods like meats and dairy, we often lack omega-3s. To boost your intake, consider flax seeds, walnuts, sardines, or salmon. I personally take Nordic Naturals ProOmega 2000 to ensure consistent support.

Zinc & Selenium: Mineral Defense for the Skin

Zinc and selenium are key players in skin repair, immune function, and free radical protection—especially after UV exposure. Zinc also supports healthy hair and nails, while selenium helps neutralize environmental damage.

I’ve been prioritizing my mineral intake lately through Pure Encapsulation’s Ultra Nutrients, a comprehensive multivitamin that includes both zinc and selenium. Food sources such as vegetables, fish, poultry, dairy, whole grains, and eggs also help maintain these essential minerals.

Supporting Your Skin in NE Portland: Nutrition + Aesthetics

When clients come to me—Dr. Heather Friedman—seeking Botox, Sculptra, vitamin B12 shots, or IV therapy in NE Portland, I consider internal health as part of their overall treatment plan. A glowing complexion is the result of both topical care and internal nourishment.

Whether you're looking to smooth fine lines, restore facial volume, or support skin from within, remember this: a well-fed body creates resilient, radiant skin.
